Letter sent 8/26

Hello from Broomfield, CO!

My week has been super crazy, but I really do love it here. I'm all
settled in, and it feels like I’ve been here way longer than one
week. Right now we don’t have any investigators, because there were a
couple of baptisms right before I arrived, but we do have multiple
potentials that we plan on visiting again later in the week. As I said
earlier, we do focus a lot on inactive, which I think is great. We
have this one sister who asked to speak with us, so we met her at the
church. Turns out she is having trouble with the law of chastity and
felt she needed help. At first I felt so awkward, but once we started
talking it was way easier. We talked a lot about the atonement, and
asking for help from our Heavenly Father. I shared with her two
scriptures, Alma 7:11, and Matt 11:28-30. She really appreciated them
and actually had a strong desire to talk to her Father in Heaven again,
which is great because she hasn’t said a sincere prayer in years. This
really helped my confidence grow, because I feel like I don’t know the
scriptures well enough to help anyone, but the Spirit was definitely
there and helped bring remembrance to those passages.

And yes, I was at the broadcast the other month, Elder Beckstrand
basically forced me into going :) Tell him hi for me as well. We open
the church building every Friday from 2-5 pm for tours, but
unfortunately I haven’t gotten a chance to give one yet. On Sunday
though after church, the sister missionaries and the bishop were the
only ones left in the building, when this woman, Charlotte, walked in.
She said she wanted to know more about this church, because her friend
who isn’t even a member recommended us to her! She knows a little about
the church, but has some misconceptions about what we believe in. We
showed her this picture book that has photos of BOM stories, and of
Christ, and with Joseph Smith and the golden plates. She was
incredibly excited to learn more, and we were prepared to sit down and
give her a real lesson, when we found out she's not even in our ward
:/ She is in the ward with elder missionaries. Boo.

Like I told dad, my favorite scripture is changing every day. We study
in the morning for one hour for personal study, and two hours of
companion study. So I’m really getting to know the scriptures and my
lessons more. As of right now, my favorite scripture is D&C 6:33-37.

33 Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye
also reap; therefore, if ye sow good ye shall also reap good for your
reward.

34 Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell
combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot
prevail.

35 Behold, I do not condemn you; go your ways and sin no more;
perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you.

36 Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

37 Behold the wounds which pierced my side, and also the prints of
the nails in my hands and feet; be faithful, keep my commandments, and
ye shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

Every time I read it I can just feel the saviors love for me.

Regarding the letters you sent me about my bedspread and bike: Yes the
bedspread is perfect, I’m no longer cold in the mornings, nor am I too
hot. Thank you so much for sending it to me. The zone leaders brought
me my package while we were at the church building doing the tours.
Unfortunately it was a huge box, and we biked to the church building.
We had to beg the other sisters to come pick us up, but it’s so far out
of the way for them. They are the only ones who have a bike rack on
their car though. Oh and also, I don’t need a bike cushion or a
bag/basket. We're going to WalMart after this, and I’ll just pick one
up there with my personal debit card.

I love you all so much. Can’t wait to hear from you!

Letter written Aug 20, 2013

Hey mom!
Yeah I'm a little sad that we couldn't talk on the phone, but I'm not to beat up about it. I wrote a snail mail to tell you to expect it, but it must not have arrived in time.

But yes, I've officially started my mission, and I'm now in Colorado! I wrote you a short letter yesterday, but I'll go into more detail now. :)

So. Started the morning SUPER early. Our district woke up at 1:45am to finish packing and to clean up the room. We had to be at the MTC travel office at 3:30 am. After we got our ticket, we took a bus to the airport, and we were nearly late. The flight was only 45 minutes long, so I didn't even get a chance to nap :/ Once we arrived, we met our Mission President and his wife, the Toombs. They are the sweetest couple! I can't wait to get to know them better. They took is from the airport to the mission office, and we had about a six hour orientation. It was pretty good, but they went over a lot of mundane things. I ended up nodding my head a couple of times, I feel like a zombie I was so exhausted. After orientation, i met my companion, Sister Mataitusi. (She told me to call her Sister M, lol). She is really nice, and has a great love for missionary work. She's only been out in the field for one transfer, so six weeks. I'm serving in the Savory Ponds ward (Really lame name btw haha) in the West Minister stake. I'm actually in the mission presidents ward, which is awesome because I'll see him every week instead of like once a month.

After I met my companion, we drove over to a semi-active members home for dinner. It was delicious! So much boring than bland MTC food.

After dinner when went to our home. We live downstairs in a members house. Unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to meet any of them yet. We have two other sisters that live with us, Sisters Hunt & Rook. Sister Hunt is crazily energetic, while Sister Rook is the shyest person I've ever met. All four of us drove to the bishops house to introduce myself. Bishop Johns is really cool, and is excited to work with us missionaries. He gave us a couple of in actives to go visit, and talked to us for a bit. At this point I'm basically falling asleep while I'm talking, since I got only two and a half hours of sleep. After the bishops house, we went tracking for a little while. We stopped at a inactive member house, and did a prayer approach. That's when you only go inside to see if they need anything, and then offer up a prayer. That's it, no lesson, and then your out again. It was really interesting, but I like it.

Once we got home, I unpacked a little bit and then finally I was able to go to bed lol.Waking up this morning was super hard, but now that I'm up and moving I'm completely fine. Mondays are our P-day, but since yesterday was transfers, today is our unofficial pday. After emailing, we're going to go shopping for food for me, and then go and do four hours of service at a place like the soup kitchen.
I'm excited.

Oh! Also, we get the chance to go to the temple every month, so that's really great. And we get to watch the ground breaking of the Fort Collins temple in a week, but just on the TV, we're not driving all the way up there for it.

But yeah, everything's great. I really love this area, and I can't wait to go teach some investigators. Unfortunately, me and my companion don't have a car, but bikes. :/ Oh well. Good work out, right? Luckily the other sister missionaries in our home drive us to some places, like to the store or whatever.

Since we live downstairs, the room gets pretty chilly at night, so would you order me a bedspread from Wal-Mart or something and send it to the mission home? I don't really care which one, but remember I have zebra print sheets so don't let it clash too much :)

I love you so much, and I cant wait to hear from you soon.
Pictures are coming in the next couple of emails.

Mi Madre!

Dear Elder is the best! It's perfect because this way I can sit down and read and think what I want to say instead of quickly reading through an email and typing like a madwoman.

I am glad to hear that you have been getting so many missionary moments(I had let her know that quite a few non members had asked questions because of her serving) Maybe you will end up converting just as many as I will!

Today was just great. I feel like I say that all the time but it's true! Today was p-day so I did tons of laundry, wrote emails, and just relaxed. It's been so insanely busy here so it was good to have downtime.

This afternoon I did a session at the Temple. I feel like the outside looks like a birthday cake but the inside is completely gorgeous and huge! The hallways went on for miles or so it felt...

One of our teachers, Sister Lyons, is a Temple worker so she took my district on a tour inside the Temple. We went to a couple of the sealing rooms, so pretty!

This evening my companion and I made a huge breakthrough with our investigator Qion. I talked a lot about him in my e3mail I sent  out today(I think I posted it earlier, if not I will do so)but this is even better. We focused our lesson on simply that God loves & blesses us. That He, like any father, wants to hear from us, and so we invited him to pray and ask Heavenly Father two specific questions that he had and he said yes! Afterwards he said he felt at peace when he was done praying. This is such a huge breakthrough to someone who never even heard of God before. I'm so grateful that we were finally reaching to him, and that he's on the path to come to Christ. Sister Hutto and I are basically giddy right now because the first two lessons with him were so rough. But that's okay it just encouraged us to work so much harder on our lessons.

I'm so grateful for this opportunity to serve a mission. I've learned sooo much about the Gospel and that as learn more it will help my investigators more. So now I am studying as hard as I can. My testimony has strengthened as well. I know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died for me personally; I know that I am a daughter of our Heavenly Father and that he loves and blesses me daily. I know I can perform miracles as a missionary and I cannot wait to be in Colorado & officially start my mission.

Well it's past 11 again. Sister Hutto and I are horrible at keeping our bedtime. Our Branch President actually talked to us about it because we both mentioned in our weekly letters to him that it was something we needed to work on.

I love you tons!

Hello again from the MTC!

So much has happened since I last wrote. I don't even remember everything and I am having to look at my schedule to jog my memory!

My companion Sister Hutto and I were made companion Trainer Missionaries. One of our main responsibilities is on Wednesday we give a tour to all the new sisters in our zone and answer any questions. We have 12 new sisters coming in tomorrow! It's all very exciting! Also on Sunday almost the entire MTC walked up to the Provo Temple. We took a lot of pictures (some are posted)
For relief society the Primary General President, Sister Wixon, spoke to us about knowing Christ and knowing that He and our Father n Heaven loves us. It was perfect. The spirit was so strong.

For our devotional on Sunday night we watched the best talk ever! A couple of years ago David A Bednar came to speak to the missionaries on Christmas. The talk was recorded but only missionaries are allowed to watch it. Apparently the President of the Provo MTC wanted to show it to his family and he wasn't allowed. The talk was titled The Character of Christ. It is all about how Christ turned outward with love, compassion, & service while the world turns inward & focuses on their own problems. Bednar gave an example of after the Garden of Gethsemane, when the guards ear was cut off. Jesus healed the guard, a minor wound compared to the agony that he suffered. I don't know. it just hit me...

I wrote most of this letter this morning and now it is past bedtime (oops) got both your letters today mom and you were asking how it was going. Well its great. I  absolutely love it here. I've learned so incredibly much about the gospel and I can't wait until I leave for Colorado.

I got my travel plans today as well. We leave the MTC Monday morning at 3:30am my flight leaves at 7:30am, and I am able to call home during that time(this would be the call we missed because we received this letter that day in the mail) so expect an early call, I can't wait to hear from you (made me sad)...

I wasn't able to go into the Provo Temple as it was closed and due to reopen after I leave. You asked if I knew anyone serving in my mission and the answer is yes. Two sisters in my district, Sisters Pack  and Fulmer are going as well. Everyone else in my district will be in the Fort Collins mission.

Every Tuesday night the MTC has a special devotional. just like BYU does. We all walked to the Marriot center. My district and I got to sing in the choir, which was tons of fun. We sang Jesus Once of Humble Birth and we sounded really great! It really invited the Spirit to the devotional. Our speaker was Richard G Scott, it was so surreal. I'm practically giddy from being able to hear an Apostle speak. His talk was about communication with our Heavenly Father. One quote from the talk really stuck out to me. Elder Scott said Heavenly Father did not put us on this earth to fail, but to succeed gloriously. How great is that quote!

Well its almost midnight and if I don't go to bed now I will be destroyed tomorrow. I love you all so much and can't wait to get more letters. I have been bragging to everyone that I have the cutest nieces and nephews so tell Dyan to send pictures immediately!

Love you lots

Letter from Sister Cannon dated Aug 9th...

Hi Dad!
The first couple days here have been amazing. Everywhere has just been so full of the spirit.
Your right, I was put right to work. As soon as I was checked in, I was immediately placed into a classroom. I think we learned the first day to learn how to study. I'm actually not even sure, it seems like so long ago. I've only been here two and a half days, but it seems like a week or more, that's how long the days here are. But its okay, I love it. I love learning about the gospel, I love my companion, my district and zone are all very close.
I keep having trouble with calling the missionaries Elders and Sisters. I keep wanted to just say Hey Guys, or something to that effect. We actually had a small lesson on that though, and we learned that calling the missionaries the appropriate title is a form of respect, because they worked hard to get that name, After that class it was a lot easier.

I've never studied so hard in my life. We have so much time to do personal study, and even more time to companion study.
Yesterday we did this amazing team companion experience thing. We had one investigator, and about twenty missionaries had to group teach the one investigator. It was really awesome. I actually stood up a couple of times to say something relevant. I'm glad I wasn't too nervous to stand up, because the investigator looked really receptive to what I was saying.

I did drink the orange juice. It was nasty. I only took about two sips before I had to put it away, so you'll have to tell Jason that the internet is apparently right.

I only have about fifteen minutes left on the computer, and I have a few other emails to write, but I wanted to let everyone know that I love them all very much, and I'm so grateful for all the wonderful support that I've received. I cant wait to hear from everyone, and PLEASE WRITE LETTERS. I can check and write snail mail every day, but email only once a week. I want to hear how everyone is doing, and tell Dyan I want pictures of the kids as often as possible :)

Love you!

Letter from Sister Cannon 8/9/2013

Hello from the MTC!

These past few days have been insane, sorry I haven't gotten a chance to sit down and write you guys a letter. The spirit has been so strong here, I love it. Wednesday afternoon, immediately after I arrived, we met our districts and started classes. My two Teachers are amazing. Their names are Brother Lyons, and Sister Lamb, which made me giggle, because I thought of the picture of The Lion and The Lamb. I have already learned so incredibly much, and it only has been two and a half days.

My dorm room is stuffed full of sister missionaries. There are three sets of companions. My companion, Sister Hutto is the sweetest, I couldn't ask for a better companion. She is so strong in the spirit, and is such a joy to be around. I already love her like a sister, which is crazy for me since it only has been such a short amount of time. Unfortunately, she will be serving in a different mission than I am, she's serving in the Colorado Fort Collins mission, instead of Denver North.

Yesterday we all went to a great workshop titled "The People and our Purpose". We broke down the missionary purpose, which is to invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through Faith in Jesus Christ and his Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end. Fun fact for you, I didn't have to look at anything when I just quoted the purpose since it's been repeated so many times, but that's alright we focused only on two aspects of the purpose, invite and help. It's really changed my outlook on what I'm supposed to be doing as a missionary.

Last night we met our Branch Presidency, who are such adorable old men and their wives. The spirit was super strong in the meeting. The president interviewed everyone in our zone, and I just found him hilarious, He reminds me of the little old man that plays chess in the beginning of Pixar movies ha.

Today (Friday) is our P-Day. It's the first chance I've had to sit down and breathe. I'm planning on doing nothing more than taking it easy and studying with my companion Sister Hutto. We were planning on going to the temple, but unfortunately the prov Temple has been closed, but next week it will be open, which is exciting. I just wanted to end this letter by sharing my testimony. I know with all my heart that this Church is true. That I was called by God to serve a mission in the Colorado Denver Area. I know that the Book of Mormon is true, that it was correctly translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith, and that it brings so many blessing to those who read it. I have a strong testimony in missionary work. I know this is where I'm supposed to be, and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to serve.

I love you all very much, and I miss you everyday. But I know that I am on the Lord's side, and he will always be there for me.

Love always,
Sister Cannon.

Emails from the MTC 08/09/13

My first day was amazing! Sorry I'm just getting back to you, everyday has been so intense I haven't found time to sit down and write. This morning I actually posted a letter to you, so you should get it in the next couple of days.

You asked about my schedule. Literally every second of my life is in classroom. We are in class about 14 hours of the day. I love it though. I have already learned so much, and its only been two and a half days.

My companion, Sister Hutto is amazing. I love her. I thought and first it would be hard to get used to being around someone 24/7 but its been so easy. We get along super well, and its just great.
The teachers are amazing as well. Bro Lyons and Sis Lamb.

Last night I was made senior companion. It doesn't really mean anything though. As the branch president told us, he used the inspiration of alphabetical order, lol.

I'm still getting over my cold. The first two days were really rough, I couldn't stop coughing or sniffling. It was nasty. But now I'm feeling a lot better.

I'm loving it here. I've never been happier, and I cant wait to learn more about the gospel.
I miss all of you very, very much, but I'm doing very well.

I love you all so much.

First update: Aug 7th, 2013

We dropped Sister Cannon off at the MTC today. She is excited to get started on her mission.

It was a bitter sweet moment for me, her mother, as she is my first to go on a mission as well as being my youngest child

I am so very proud of her desire to serve God and know she will do a great job!
